Setting Intentions for 2016

January 04, 2016 Lana Jelenjev

For the past 18 plus months I considered myself to be in “survival mode”. After learning about my breast cancer diagnosis in June 2014, I have spent most of the months after that in and out of the hospital. I finally finished my last round of herceptin last December 24, marking my freedom from anything hospital related until my next check-up in 6 months time! Being cancer free and gaining back my energy is such a big sigh of relief for me and my family. This year is the year of rebirth. A year that I set out my intentions...

What makes you wonder about Christmas carols?

December 10, 2015 Lana Jelenjev

My memories of Christmas carols... My children are avid singers. While writing this I can hear one singing in the shower and the other one singing along the radio that was playing Christmas carols. Ahhh Christmas carols, hearing them brings a lot of childhood memories. From where I came from, Christmas carols can be heard in the radio as early as September (-ber months and the Philippines is known to be the country with the longest Christmas celebration!). Kids go to different houses at night with their self-made musical instruments (commonly made from bottle caps flattened with a hole in...

Teaching Children to Be Mindful Through the Holidays

December 07, 2015 Lana Jelenjev

One of the best gifts we can give as parents to our children is to teach them how to be mindful. Mindfulness cannot be acquired so easily, it has to be honed and children even as young as three years of age can be taught to be mindful of their body and of their activities. Why is mindfulness important? Mindfulness is defined as “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the unfolding of experiences moment by moment (Kabat-Zinn). Being mindful allows children to be aware of their inner state,...

What is your FAMILY BRAND?

November 09, 2015 Lana Jelenjev

Last November 8, I gave a talk on “What is your Family Brand?” for the International Family Fair. Surrounded by families from different cultural backgrounds, the topic on “family culture” was received with a lot of nodding heads and resonating acknowledgements. So what is this topic about? Why such a concept of a “family brand”? Being a multicultural family has its many ups and downs. I so love the letter penned by Sundae Schneider-Bean on “A love letter every international couple needs to read” and this gives a glimpse of what couples go through in such a multicultural union. However,...

FIVE WAYS TO RECONNECT WITH YOUR CHILD AFTER SCHOOL

August 26, 2015 Lana Jelenjev

After six weeks of summer vacation, I find myself going back to our school time routine. However, as I reflected on last year’s first week of school experiences, I realized that it was so easy to let the new school year go by. Last year, we were all preoccupied on my treatments. The focus was set primarily on me getting through radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This year I intend to make things different. I would like to make the most of the after school period to reconnect with our children and to have a bigger picture of their day. Part of...
